Tisha Felice Waller (born December 1, 1970) is an American athlete who competed in the high jump. She represented the United States in the 1996 Summer Olympics and the 2004 Summer Olympics. Tisha was a five-time American champion in high jump. She also won a gold medal at the 1998 Goodwill Games and bronze medals at the 1991 World University Games and the 1999 World Indoor Championships.
Tisha Waller was born in South Boston, Virginia, and grew up in Decatur, Georgia. She went to Halifax County High School and then studied at the University of North Carolina. After college, she became a kindergarten teacher. In 1996, she was even named Teacher of the Year at Livsey Elementary School in DeKalb County, Georgia. That same year, she won the United States Olympic Trials (track and field). This allowed her to compete in the Olympic Games held in her home country.
Tisha focused on high jump, training with coach Nat Page for several years. In 2001, she took a break from sports to finish her master's degree at Clark University. She then returned to teaching first grade at Wynbrooke Traditional Theme School in Stone Mountain, Georgia. In 2003, she was honored as USATF's Visa Humanitarian Athlete of the Year for her good deeds.
High Jump Achievements
Tisha Waller set an American indoor record for women in the high jump. On February 28, 1998, she jumped 2.01 meters (about 6 feet, 7.25 inches) at the USA Indoor Championships. This amazing record stood for 14 years! It was finally broken in 2012 by Chaunté Lowe, who jumped just one centimeter higher, reaching 2.02 meters.
