Anthony Michael Hargain (born December 26, 1967) is a former American football player. He played as a wide receiver. Tony Hargain played one season with the Kansas City Chiefs in the National Football League (NFL). He was chosen by the San Francisco 49ers in the 1991 NFL draft. Before playing professionally, he played both football and basketball at the University of Oregon.

Early Life and High School Sports

Anthony Michael Hargain was born on December 26, 1967. His hometown is Palo Alto, California. When he was in high school, Tony went to Center High School. This school is located in Antelope, California.

At Center High, Tony was a talented athlete. He played both basketball and football. In basketball, he was a great scorer. During his senior year, he scored an average of 26.2 points in each game. In football, he played as a quarterback.

College Sports Career

Tony Hargain continued his sports journey at the University of Oregon. He played both college football and basketball for the Oregon Ducks.

Basketball at Oregon

Tony was a three-time letterman in basketball. This means he played well enough to earn a special award for three seasons. He played basketball from the 1986–87 season to the 1988–89 season. During his college basketball career, he played in 59 games. He started four of those games. On average, he scored 2.3 points per game.

Football at Oregon

Tony also played football for the Oregon Ducks. He took a "redshirt" year in 1986. This means he practiced with the team but did not play in games. This allowed him to gain experience without using up a year of his college playing eligibility.

He was a four-year letterman in football from 1987 to 1990.

  • In 1987, his first year playing, he caught 18 passes for 215 yards. He also scored one touchdown. He ran the ball 16 times for 27 yards.
  • In 1988, he caught five passes for 49 yards.
  • In 1989, he had a very good season. He caught 35 passes for 586 yards and scored four touchdowns.
  • In 1990, he caught ten passes for 206 yards and two touchdowns. He missed most of this senior year because of a broken kneecap.

Tony also tried throwing the ball sometimes. He completed one pass out of ten attempts for 36 yards.

Professional Football Journey

Tony Hargain began his professional football career in 1991.

Starting with the 49ers

The San Francisco 49ers chose Tony in the 1991 1991 NFL draft. He was the 221st player picked overall in the eighth round. However, he was placed on a special list in August 1991. This meant he missed the entire season. After that season, he became a free agent. This means he could sign with any team.

Playing for the Kansas City Chiefs

On April 1, 1992, Tony signed with the Kansas City Chiefs. He played in 12 games for the Chiefs during the 1992 season. He caught 17 passes for 205 yards. He also played in one playoff game. In that game, he caught two passes for 46 yards. The Chiefs released him in August 1993.

Other Teams

Tony was briefly with the Los Angeles Rams in 1993. He signed and was released a few times but did not play in any games for them.

In 1994, he signed again with the San Francisco 49ers. However, he was released before the season started.

Later in 1994, Tony joined the Sacramento Gold Miners. This team was part of the Canadian Football League. He played in 13 games for them. He caught 39 passes for 617 yards.

In February 1996, Tony signed with the Denver Broncos. He was waived by them in August 1996.

His last professional team was the London Monarchs in 1997. This team was part of the World League of American Football (WLAF). He was chosen by them in the 1997 WLAF draft. However, he was waived by the Monarchs in March 1997.

Life After Football

After his football career, Tony Hargain started his own business. He founded a company called Hustlin USA Clothing Company.
