These were the 1969 Open Championship and the 1970 U.S. Open. He also led the European Ryder Cup team as captain from 1983 to 1989. During his time as captain, Europe won two times and tied once.

Tony became a professional golfer in 1962. In 1963, he was named "Rookie of the Year." He won many tournaments throughout his career. He played on the PGA Tour and the European Tour. After turning 50, he also played on the Senior PGA Tour.

Early Life and Golf Beginnings

Tony Jacklin was born in Scunthorpe, England, on July 7, 1944. His father, Arthur, was a lorry driver. He was the one who first taught Tony about golf. Tony went to Henderson Avenue Primary School. Later, he attended Doncaster Road Secondary School.

Amateur Golf Career

Tony was a very good young golfer. He won the junior championship in Lincolnshire four times. He won it every year from 1958 to 1961. In 1961, he won by a huge 20 strokes. That same year, he played in the Boys Amateur Championship. He also played for England and a combined England and Scotland team.

Tony became a professional golfer in 1962. He started as an assistant at Potters Bar Golf Club. In 1963, he played in the 1963 Open Championship. He finished tied for 30th place. At the end of 1963, he was named "Rookie of the Year" by golf legend Henry Cotton.

In 1964, Tony won the Coombe Hill Assistants' Tournament. He also played well in the Blaxnit (Ulster) Tournament. In 1965, he played in the Carling World Open in the United States. He won $1,000 there. He also won the Gor-Ray Cup, which was the Assistants' Championship.

Tony visited South Africa in 1966. He finished third in the South African Masters. He also won the Kimberley 4000 Tournament. Back in Britain, he won the Blaxnit (Ulster) Tournament. He also finished second in the Rediffusion Tournament. Tony played for England in the 1966 Canada Cup in Japan. He then went to New Zealand. He won the 1967 New Zealand PGA Championship there.

In 1967, Tony won two tournaments on the British PGA circuit. These were the Pringle of Scotland Tournament and the Dunlop Masters. He also finished fifth in the 1967 Open Championship. During the Dunlop Masters, he made a hole-in-one that was shown live on TV. Later that year, he joined the 1968 PGA Tour. He also played in his first 1967 Ryder Cup.

Playing in the USA: PGA Tour

Tony had a great first year on the PGA Tour in 1968. He won the Jacksonville Open. This was the first time a British player won a big American event in many years. He finished 29th in the money list.

In July 1969, Tony won the 1969 Open Championship at Royal Lytham. He was the first British golfer to win The Open since 1951.

Tony was part of a famous moment in golf history at the 1969 Ryder Cup. The event ended in a tie. In his singles match against Jack Nicklaus, Tony made a great putt on the 17th hole to tie the match. On the last hole, Nicklaus showed great sportsmanship. He conceded Tony's short putt, meaning Tony didn't have to hit it. This made the match a tie. This moment is called "The Concession." Tony and Nicklaus later designed a golf course together in Florida. They named it "The Concession" to remember that moment.

In 1970, Tony won his second major championship. He won the U.S. Open by seven strokes. This win meant he didn't have to qualify for PGA Tour events for 10 years. He finished 20th in the money list that year. He also finished fifth in the 1970 Open Championship.

Tony played on the PGA Tour in 1971. He finished third in the 1971 Open Championship. He also won the Benson & Hedges Festival in Britain. He played in the 1971 Ryder Cup again.

In 1972, Tony had a much better season on the PGA Tour. He won the Greater Jacksonville Open for the second time. He won after a playoff.

Tony almost won the 1972 Open Championship at Muirfield. He was tied for the lead with Lee Trevino on the 71st hole. Trevino made a very difficult chip shot into the hole. Tony then took three putts to finish the hole. This meant he was one shot behind. Trevino won, and Tony finished third. This moment was very tough for Tony.

Playing in Europe: European Tour

Tony played less on the PGA Tour in 1973 and 1974. He focused more on the European Tour. In 1973, he won two events: the Italian Open and the Dunlop Masters. He also finished second in three other tournaments. He was a top player on the European Tour that year. He also played in the 1973 Ryder Cup.

In 1974, Tony won the Scandinavian Enterprise Open. He also finished second in the Swiss Open.

Tony returned to the PGA Tour in 1975. He had some good finishes, including second place in the 1977 Bing Crosby National Pro-Am. He continued to play on the European Tour. He won the 1976 Kerrygold International Classic.

Tony played in the 1975 Ryder Cup and the 1977 Ryder Cup. He played his last Ryder Cup as a player in 1979.

Ryder Cup Captaincy

Tony Jacklin became the captain of the European Ryder Cup team. He led the team for four straight Ryder Cups, from 1983 to 1989. He was a very successful captain. In 1985, he led his team to their first victory in 28 years. In 1987, Europe won for the first time ever in the United States. In 1989, the match was tied, but Europe kept the cup.

Senior Golf Career

After turning 50, Tony played on the Senior PGA Tour from 1994 to 1997. He won two tournaments: the First of America Classic in 1994 and the Franklin Quest Championship in 1995. He also played on the European Seniors Tour.

Tony has also designed golf courses since he stopped competing.
