Anthony Jacklin (born 7 July 1944) is a famous English golfer. He was the best British player of his time. He won two major golf championships: The 1969 Open Championship and the 1970 U.S. Open. He also led the European Ryder Cup team as captain from 1983 to 1989. During this time, Europe won two Ryder Cups and tied one.

Tony Jacklin became a professional golfer in 1962. In 1963, he was named "Rookie of the Year." He won many tournaments throughout his career. He played on the PGA Tour and the European Tour. After turning 50, he also played on the Senior PGA Tour.

Early Life and Golf Beginnings

Tony Jacklin was born in Scunthorpe, England, on July 7, 1944. His father, Arthur, was a lorry driver who first introduced Tony to golf. Tony went to Henderson Avenue Primary School and later Doncaster Road Secondary School.

Amateur Golf Success

Tony showed great talent in golf from a young age. He won the Lincolnshire junior championship four times in a row, from 1958 to 1961. In 1961, he won the Lincolnshire Open by a large margin. He also played for England and a combined England and Scotland team in junior matches.

Becoming a Professional Golfer

In 1962, Tony Jacklin became a professional golfer. He started as an assistant at Potters Bar Golf Club.

Early Professional Years

Tony quickly made a name for himself. In 1963, he played in the 1963 Open Championship and finished tied for 30th place. He was also named "Rookie of the Year" by famous golfer Henry Cotton. In 1964, he won the Coombe Hill Assistants' Tournament.

He played in South Africa and the United States in the mid-1960s. In 1965, he won the Gor-Ray Cup after a sudden-death playoff. In 1966, he won the Blaxnit (Ulster) Tournament. He also won the 1967 New Zealand PGA Championship in early 1967.

In 1967, Tony won two more tournaments in Britain: the Pringle of Scotland Tournament and the Dunlop Masters. During the Dunlop Masters, he made a hole-in-one that was shown live on TV! He also qualified to play on the 1968 PGA Tour in the United States.

Playing on the PGA Tour

Tony Jacklin had a very successful first year on the PGA Tour in 1968.

First Big Wins

In March 1968, he won the Jacksonville Open. This was a big deal because it was the first time a British player had won a major American golf event since the 1920s. He finished 29th on the money list that year.

In July 1969, Tony won his first major championship: The 1969 Open Championship at Royal Lytham. He was the first British golfer to win The Open since 1951.

In 1970, he won his second major title, the U.S. Open. He won by an impressive seven strokes at Hazeltine National Golf Club. This win meant he was guaranteed a spot in PGA Tour events for the next 10 years.

Later PGA Tour Years

Tony continued to play well in the early 1970s. In 1970, he lost in a playoff at the Andy Williams San Diego Open. In 1972, he won the Greater Jacksonville Open again after a playoff.

A tough moment for Tony happened at the 1972 Open Championship. He was tied for the lead with Lee Trevino on the 71st hole. Trevino made an amazing chip shot, and Tony then took three putts, falling behind. Trevino won, and Tony finished third. This moment affected him deeply.

European Tour and Ryder Cup Captaincy

After 1972, Tony played more on the European Tour. He won the Italian Open and the Dunlop Masters in 1973. He also won the Scandinavian Enterprise Open in 1974.

Ryder Cup Hero

Tony Jacklin played in seven Ryder Cup matches for Great Britain & Ireland from 1967 to 1979. The Ryder Cup is a team golf competition between Europe and the United States.

One of the most famous moments in Ryder Cup history involved Tony and Jack Nicklaus in 1969. Their match ended in a tie when Nicklaus famously conceded Tony's short putt on the final hole. This act of sportsmanship is known as "The Concession." Tony and Nicklaus later designed a golf course together in Florida called "The Concession" to remember this moment.

Tony became the captain of the European Ryder Cup team from 1983 to 1989. He led his team to their first victory in 28 years in 1985. Then, in 1987, he led them to their first-ever win in the United States! He was a very successful captain.

Senior Golf Career and Beyond

After turning 50, Tony Jacklin played on the Senior PGA Tour (now called the Champions Tour) from 1994 to 1997. He won two tournaments: the First of America Classic in 1994 and the Franklin Quest Championship in 1995. He also played on the European Seniors Tour.

Since retiring from playing full-time, Tony has designed many golf courses.
