Torre Egger is a tall mountain in South America. It is part of the Southern Patagonian Ice Field. This area is located between Argentina and Chile, and both countries claim it. Torre Egger sits between two other famous mountains: Cerro Torre and Cerro Stanhardt. The mountain is named after Toni Egger, an Austrian climber. He sadly passed away trying to climb a nearby mountain called Cerro Torre.
First Climbs on Torre Egger
In 1976, three climbers from the United States made the first successful climb of Torre Egger. These climbers were John Bragg, Jim Donini, and Jay Wilson. They started their climb in December 1975.
Their journey was tough because of bad weather. They first reached a spot called the Col of Conquest. This col is a low point between Torre Egger and Cerro Torre. From there, they climbed up a ridge to the top. They finally reached the summit on February 22, 1976.
Other Amazing Ascents
Many climbers have tried to reach the top of Torre Egger. Here are some notable climbs:
- 1986: Three climbers from Slovenia, Janez Jeglič, Silvo Karo, and Franc Knez, climbed the Southeast Face. This was a very challenging route.
- 1987: Maurizio Giarolli and Elio Orlandi from Italy completed the "Titanic" route on the East Pillar.
- 1994: Conrad Anker, Jay Smith, and Steve Gerberding from the US made the first ascent of a route called "Badlands."
- 2005: Steph Davis and Dean Potter climbed the "Titanic" route. Steph Davis was the first woman to climb Torre Egger. Their climb was also likely the first time someone climbed the mountain in just one day.
- 2012: Matteo Bernasconi and Matteo Della Bordella climbed the West Face.
- 2013: Matteo Della Bordella and Luca Schiera also climbed the West Face.
- 2016: Marc-André Leclerc completed the "Titanic" route by himself in winter. This was a very difficult solo climb.
In January 2008, two climbers, Rolando Garibotti and Colin Haley, achieved something incredible. They climbed all four main peaks in the area together. They started with Aguja Standhardt, then Punta Herron, then Torre Egger, and finally Cerro Torre. This was a huge achievement in the climbing world. It was considered one of the most famous unclimbed routes.
