Totterdown is a cool neighborhood in Bristol, England. It's just south of the River Avon and close to the city center. You can find it southeast of the Temple Meads railway station.
This area climbs up a hill from the river. You'll see many old Victorian houses here. They are famous for being painted in bright, fun colors! You can spot them from far away.
Some roads in Totterdown are super steep! One street, called Vale Street, is very short. But people say it's the steepest street in England where people live.

A Look Back at Totterdown's Past
Totterdown was built in the 1800s. It was a home for people who worked on the railways nearby. In the 1970s, many old Victorian buildings were taken down. This was because a big new road was planned. But this part of the road was never built.
More recently, Totterdown has become a popular place. Many young people who work in the city center like to live here. In 2016, The Times newspaper even called it one of the "hippest places to live in the UK."

Totterdown has several local pubs. Some of them have DJ nights, which are popular with younger people. Places like The Oxford and The Thunderbolt often have live music. The Oxford even has "open mike" events for new performers.
You can also find more and more great restaurants here. Mrs Brown's Cafe opened in Victoria Park in 2007. It serves Fairtrade coffee and yummy cakes from a caravan!

Totterdown has different hairdressers and beauty salons. There's a doctors surgery for health needs. Buses make it easy to get around town and to Clifton. You'll also find the Bristol Jamia Mosque near Victoria Park. There are also thriving Methodist, CofE, and Baptist churches.
In 2015, a special bakery opened on Oxford Street. It makes artisanal bread. Many new independent shops have also opened on Wells Road. These include cafes, a bar, a craft store, a vintage shop, and a florist.

Totterdown is a great place for young families. There are daily playgroups for toddlers at Totterdown Baptist Church.
Victoria Park has a fantastic new play area. It also has tennis courts, basketball courts, and football pitches. There's even a skatepark! School Road Park has also been updated. It has fun play equipment like swings, slides, mini trampolines, and a sandpit.
Perrett's Park is a natural outdoor theater. It has benches around the top. From here, you can watch the hot air balloons during the summer Balloon Fiesta. This park also has a play area perfect for kids under 10.
Art and Creativity
The Totterdown Art Trail, called Frontroom, is a special event. During this trail, artists in the area open their homes. Visitors can come inside to see many different kinds of local artwork.
Hidden History: Aldebury
People believe that Totterdown is where an ancient Iron Age hill fort called Aldebury once stood. This fort was behind Bellevue. However, the area is now covered with buildings.
