The History of Treasure Coast News
Treasure Coast Newspapers began as part of the Scripps-Howard company. Scripps-Howard bought the newspaper in Stuart in 1965. They also bought the weekly paper from Jupiter in 1978. The Indian River newspaper, based in Vero Beach, joined in 1997. The News Tribune became part of the group in 2000.
Scripps also used to publish another weekly newspaper. It was called the Sebastian Sun. The group also printed several weekly magazines. These magazines were about business and lifestyle. In the past, Scripps Treasure Coast newspapers were available in five counties. This included Palm Beach County.
The Story of The Stuart News
The Stuart News started from two older newspapers. These were the Stuart Times (1913) and Stuart Messenger (1915). The Clyma family bought them in 1922. They turned it into a daily newspaper in 1925. It was called the Stuart Daily News. They said Stuart was the smallest U.S. town with a daily paper.
Edwin A. Menninger bought it in 1928. It was renamed the Stuart News in 1934. At that time, it became a weekly paper. Gordon B. Lockwood bought the newspaper in 1957. Then, Scripps bought it in 1965. It started printing five days a week in 1973. A special edition for St. Lucie was added in 1976. The newspaper became a daily morning paper again in 1984.
The St. Lucie News Tribune
The St. Lucie News Tribune is based in Fort Pierce. Its history goes back to 1903. It was formed in 1920 by joining two weekly newspapers. These were the Fort Pierce News and St. Lucie County Tribune. It became a daily paper in 1926. Freedom Communications owned it since 1969.
In 2000, Scripps traded two newspapers for the News Tribune. These were The Destin Log and The Walton County Log. Scripps had owned these papers in northwest Florida.
The Indian River Press Journal
The Indian River Press Journal began as the Vero Press. Paul Nisle first published this weekly paper in 1919. In 1926, the Brossier brothers and John Justin started the Vero Beach Journal. This paper came out three times a week.
A slow economy made things hard for both papers. The Press had to cut back to weekly printing in 1927. It had been printing six days a week. The Schumann group bought the Press. The first Vero Beach Press Journal was published in May 1927. It was a weekly paper.
In the 1970s, the newspaper changed. It went from an afternoon paper to a morning paper. It slowly added more printing days. By 1982, it became a daily newspaper. When Scripps bought it in 1997, it was special. It was the last daily newspaper in Florida owned by one family.
