Early Life and Education
Trivikram Srinivas was born Akella Naga Srinivasa Sharma in Bhimavaram, Andhra Pradesh. As a child, he loved watching movies and dreamed of becoming a director by age 14. However, he thought it was an impossible dream because his family didn't have much money. Even a trip to Hyderabad, where the Telugu film industry is, seemed too expensive.
School and College Years
Trivikram went to S.Ch.B.R.M. High School. He then earned a Bachelor of Science (B.Sc) degree from D.N.R. College in Bhimavaram. After that, he moved to Visakhapatnam to study for his master's degree at Andhra University. While there, he watched movies every day, but he kept his dream of directing a secret from his parents. He also loved reading books and finished his two-year master's degree in nuclear physics in just 15 months, earning a gold medal.
Becoming a Teacher
After college, Trivikram became a high school teacher in Bhimavaram. He taught math, physics, and chemistry. His friend, actor Sunil, was trying to get into the film industry in Hyderabad. Sunil asked Trivikram to join him for support, and Trivikram agreed. He started giving tuition classes to earn money and spent his free time looking for ways to enter the film world.
Career in Films
Starting as a Writer
Trivikram met writer Kommanapalli Ganapathi Rao, who suggested he publish a short story. Trivikram's story, "Road," was published in a Telugu newspaper, and he used the pen name "Trivikram" for the first time. This name later became very popular.
First Steps in Writing
Ganapathi Rao liked Trivikram's writing and offered him work on a film called Merupu (1996). Trivikram worked on it for 10 days but had to leave because he couldn't afford to travel to the new shooting location. Later, his friend Gautam Raju helped him get another chance. Trivikram met T. D. V. Prasad, who was working on Akka! Bagunnava? (1996). Trivikram wrote a climax for the film that impressed another writer, Posani Krishna Murali.
Trivikram then worked for a film program on ETV. Gautam Raju reconnected him with Posani, who was in Chennai. Trivikram used his earnings to travel to Chennai. When asked if he knew how to write scripts, he said yes, even though he didn't. While Posani was on the phone, Trivikram quickly learned the script format by looking at one. He then wrote scenes for Pavitra Bandham (1996) that impressed Posani. This is how his writing career began. For 20 months, Posani taught him a lot about writing for different types of films.
Big Break as a Screenwriter
Trivikram wanted to direct films, not just be an assistant writer. He met actor Venu and producer Venkata Shyam Prasad. He told them the story of Swayamvaram, summarizing it with a powerful line: "From the Heaven called Love, 7 steps away lies the Hell called Marriage." The film's director, K. Vijaya Bhaskar, insisted Trivikram write the dialogues. Swayamvaram was released on April 22, 1999, and became a big success, marking Trivikram's official debut as a screenwriter.
Nuvve Kavali (2000)
After Swayamvaram, Trivikram didn't get many offers. He went back home for a while. Then, he got a call to help with the remake of a Malayalam film called Niram (1999), which would become Nuvve Kavali. Trivikram rewrote all the dialogues, keeping only one line from the original: "Why haven't you told 'I Love You' to me first?" He added humor and new characters. Nuvve Kavali was released in late 2000 and became a huge hit, earning a lot of money. At the same time, he also wrote the story and dialogues for Chirunavvutho (2000).
Other Writing Projects
After his early successes, Trivikram continued to write stories and dialogues for many films. These include Nuvvu Naaku Nachav (2001), Manmadhudu (2002), Malliswari (2004), and Jai Chiranjeeva (2005). He also wrote dialogues for Vasu (2002).
Trivikram even wrote lyrics for a song in Oka Raju Oka Rani (2003). He also sang a part of the song "Computers-u Arts-u Science-u" in his first movie as a director, Nuvve Nuvve (2002). Even before he became a director, his writing was so good that it set a high standard in Telugu films.
Directorial Debut and Success
While working on Nuvve Kavali, Trivikram told producer Sravanthi Ravi Kishore the script for Nuvve Nuvve. The producer liked it and asked him to direct it. Trivikram agreed but wanted more time to feel confident. He started directing Nuvve Nuvve after his film Nuvvu Naaku Nachav was released in late 2001.
First Directed Films
Nuvve Nuvve was released in 2002, marking Trivikram's first time as a director. The movie was praised by critics and did well at the box office. However, Trivikram felt that his writing skills were still stronger than his directing skills in that film.
His next film as a director was Athadu (2005), which was also highly praised. It earned a lot of money and was even dubbed into other languages like Tamil, Malayalam, and Hindi. It was also the first Telugu film to be dubbed into Polish and released in Poland.
Big Hits and Challenges
Trivikram's third film, Jalsa (2008), was highly anticipated. It was released in many theaters and became the highest-grossing Telugu film of 2008. After Jalsa, he directed Khaleja (2010), working again with actor Mahesh Babu. Khaleja received mixed reviews and didn't do as well as expected at the box office.
Continued Commercial Success
Trivikram wrote the dialogues and screenplay for Teen Maar (2011). He then directed Julayi (2012), starring Allu Arjun, which was a box-office hit. His next film, Attarintiki Daredi (2013), starring Pawan Kalyan, faced a challenge when a pirated version was leaked online before its release. Despite this, the film became a huge success and was called a "perfect family entertainer."
In 2015, Trivikram directed S/O Satyamurthy, also starring Allu Arjun. The film was released on April 9, 2015, and was well-received. It earned a lot of money, making it a big success. His romance film A Aa (2016) also did well.
Recent Films
The year 2018 had mixed results for Trivikram. His film Agnyaathavaasi was not successful. However, Aravinda Sametha Veera Raghava, starring NTR Jr., became a big hit, earning a lot of money worldwide.
His 2020 film Ala Vaikunthapurramuloo, starring Allu Arjun and Pooja Hegde, became one of the highest-grossing Telugu films of all time when it was released.
More recently, Trivikram wrote the screenplay and dialogues for Bheemla Nayak (2022) and Bro (2023). His latest film as a director is Guntur Kaaram (2024), which stars Mahesh Babu. This was their third movie together.
Personal Life
In Hyderabad, Trivikram, along with friends like actor Sunil, R. P. Patnaik, and Dasaradh, used to meet at a café called "Try Luck." They would discuss their dreams of working in films. Interestingly, they all started becoming successful in the film industry only after the café closed down. Trivikram still pays rent for a room in the Punjagutta neighborhood as a memory of those early days.
Trivikram and actor Sunil have been friends since their childhood in Bhimavaram. They both went to D.N.R. College and even got married on the same day!
In 2002, Trivikram married Sai Soujanya, who is the niece of famous Telugu lyricist Sirivennela Seetharama Sastry. They have two children.
Filmmaking Style
Trivikram's writing is known for its clever and subtle humor. His films are famous for their creative and quick-witted dialogues. Critics have praised his movies for making characters more interesting and lively.
Trivikram often includes surprising action scenes in his films. He also likes to show two different versions of the same event in a movie, giving different viewpoints. The female characters in his films often bring a lot of laughter, while the male characters are usually protective of their families. Themes like self-respect and the importance of relationships over money are also common in his stories.
