Tugun is a lovely beach-side suburb in Queensland, Australia. It is part of the Gold Coast area. In 2021, about 7,175 people lived there. Tugun is right next to New South Wales. Some local people like to call it 'Tugz'.

Tugun is located where the Pacific and Gold Coast highways meet. It is about 7 kilometers (4.3 miles) north-west of Coolangatta. Tugun is also about 97 kilometers (60 miles) south of Brisbane, the capital city of Queensland.

Tugun's Neighborhoods and Beaches

Tugun Heights is a neighborhood found in the western part of the suburb. This area is higher up than the rest of Tugun.

Flat Rock is a flat, rocky spot along the beach. It marks the border between Tugun and Currumbin to the north.

Tugun Beach stretches from Flat Rock down to Bilinga. Even though the beach continues into Bilinga, it is then called Bilinga Beach.

Tugun is a popular place for holidays. You can find many holiday apartments and motels along Tugun Beach. The area also has many shops along Golden-Four Drive. This road was named after the "Golden Four" beaches: Tugun, Bilinga, North Kirra, and Kirra.

The Gold Coast Oceanway is a path for walking and cycling. It connects Tugun with its nearby suburbs, Currumbin and Bilinga.

A Look at Tugun's Past

The name Tugun is thought to come from an Indigenous word. It is believed to mean "breaking waves."

Tugun Baptist Church first opened in February 1925. The land for the church was given by Mrs J. H. Morgan.

St Monica's Catholic Church opened in 1959. It could hold 150 people. The church was made bigger in 1970 and again in 1990.

Tugun Bowls Club was started in 1967. It is a place where people can play lawn bowls.

Traffic used to be very bad where the Pacific and Gold Coast highways met. This problem got much better after the Tugun Bypass was finished in June 2008.

Who Lives in Tugun?

In 2011, Tugun had 5,976 people living there. About 51% were female and 49% were male. The average age was 39 years old. Most people, about 76%, were born in Australia. Other people came from New Zealand (5.3%) and England (4%).

In 2016, the population of Tugun grew to 6,588 people.

By 2021, Tugun's population had reached 7,175 people.

Health and Community Services

John Flynn Private Hospital is located at 42 Inland Drive. This hospital provides medical and surgical care. It also helps with heart problems.

The Gold Coast City Council used to have a mobile library service. It would visit Station Street and Toolona Street. This service was stopped for a while due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

St Monica's Catholic Church is at 485 Golden Four Drive.

The Living Temple Church is at 24 Toolona Street. This church used to be called Tugun Baptist Church.

Tugun Bowls Club is on Kaleena Street. It has three greens for lawn bowling. There is also a restaurant and bar for members and visitors.

Tugun Surf Lifesaving Club is on the beachfront at 29 O'Connor Street. They help keep the beach safe during warmer months. The club also takes part in lifesaving sports. It has a bistro and bar.

Some well-known sports teams are from this area. The Tugun Seahawks are a local rugby league club. They play their home games at Betty Diamond Complex.

You can also find the Tugun Tavern in the suburb.
