Tullamarine (Listeni/ˌtʌləməˈrn/ TUL-ə--reen) is a suburb in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. It is about 14 km (8.7 mi) north-west of Melbourne's city centre.

Tullamarine is part of three different local government areas: Brimbank, Hume, and Merri-bek. In 2021, about 6,733 people lived here.

The suburb has many newer homes and light industrial businesses. It is mostly flat and can get hot winds in summer and cold winds in winter. A key feature of Tullamarine is the nearby Melbourne Airport. The residential part of Tullamarine is shaped by a loop of the Moonee Ponds Creek. The airport forms its western border. A smaller residential area called Gladstone Park is also within Tullamarine. The Albion-Jacana railway line separates Tullamarine from Airport West to the south.

History of Tullamarine

How Tullamarine Got Its Name

The name Tullamarine likely comes from Tullamareena. He was a young member of the Wurundjeri people. A government advisor, Reverend Langhorne, suggested the name. About 40 years before, the area was known as Toolimerin.

Tullamarine in the 1800s

The original Tullamarine Village was on Bulla Road, now called Melrose Drive. It was located where three town boundaries met. The first primary school was on land now part of the airport. The post office was near the current Tullamarine Reserve.

Long ago, Tullamarine stretched west to the Organ Pipes National Park. The area near the Maribyrnong River, Jacksons Creek, and Deep Creek was called Tullamarine Island. This was because it was hard for people to cross the rivers when they were full.

In 1842, land in Tullamarine was divided for farms. Most of it was sold in 1850. A school opened in 1855, followed by two more. A State primary school opened in 1884. The Tullamarine Post Office started on March 4, 1859. By 1865, Tullamarine had a hotel and about 200 residents.

Many important farms and families lived in Tullamarine during the 1800s. These included "Camp Hill" and "Viewpoint." "Stewarton" later became Gladstone Park. Famous people like John Pascoe Fawkner owned land here. The McNabs, who introduced Ayrshire cattle to Australia, also had farms.

Local leaders like Alec Rasmussen, Major Murphy, and Leo Dineen helped shape Tullamarine. The Spring Street Reserve is named after Leo Dineen. He worked hard to create sports clubs and facilities.

The Tullamarine Methodist Church was built in 1870. Its stained glass windows are now in the Uniting Church in Gladstone Park. The Tullamarine Progress Association was formed in 1924. This group helped improve the area.

Tullamarine in the 1900s

By the 1930s, Tullamarine Village had a church, tennis, and football clubs. It also had a progress association. The main activities were growing hay and raising animals. In the mid-1950s, Tullamarine became a mix of farms and homes.

Later in the 1950s, the government decided to build a new airport nearby. Land for the airport was bought in the early 1960s. The local school moved to a new spot in 1961.

In 1955, the Village Drive-In movie theatre opened. It could hold 862 cars. The drive-in closed in 1984. The land was then used to build houses. Streets there are named after famous film studios, like Forum and Paramount.

Between 1967 and 1970, the Tullamarine Freeway was built. This road separated Tullamarine from its eastern area, which became Gladstone Park. The part of Tullamarine west of the freeway has homes and a large industrial area. The Western Ring Road also runs along its edge.

In 1988, there was a plan to name roads inside the airport after Aboriginal people, pioneers, and aviation figures. This plan was cancelled, but one road, Gowrie Park Drive, was named. It remembers a farm used as a landing spot for planes in the 1920s. During World War II, planes were hidden there overnight to protect them from bombing raids.

Tullamarine in the 2000s

Sharps Road, which runs near the southern edge of Tullamarine, was a single road until the late 1980s. Today, Sharps Road is a dual-carriageway road. It runs next to the Western Ring Road and leads to Melbourne Airport.

In 1987, the average house price in Tullamarine was 97% of Melbourne's average. By 1996, it was 82% of the city's average.
