Tunstall is a neighborhood, or suburb, in Sunderland, England. It's part of Tyne and Wear. Most of the homes here are privately owned. Tunstall is located west of Ryhope and east of Silksworth.
The area was built around a big hill called Tunstall Hill. Since 1966, people called pilgrims have placed crosses on the hill every Good Friday. A pilgrim is someone who travels for religious reasons.
Tunstall is also home to the Venerable Bede Church of England Academy. This school is built on the land where the Ryhope Colliery (a coal mine) used to be. Later, it was a golf course before the school was built.
A Look Back in Time
Tunstall has been a village for a very long time, even since the early Middle Ages. This means it existed many hundreds of years ago! It was first mentioned in a very old book from 1183 called the Boldon Book. This book was like a survey from the Norman era, listing who owned what land.
Even today, the village green in Tunstall looks much like it did in medieval times. By the 1300s, another survey, called Hatfield's survey of Durham, showed that 12 families lived in the village. They farmed about 110 acres of land. There were also 14 houses, a mill, and two small cottages in the area.
