Tuscarora (which is called Tosa Konoki in the Shoshoni language) is a small community in Elko County, Nevada, United States. It's not officially a city or town, but a place where people live together. You can find it on the east side of the Tuscarora Mountains, about 40 miles north of Carlin. Tuscarora is part of the larger Elko area.

Even though some websites say it's a ghost town, Tuscarora is still home to people. It has two schools, a library, a post office, and a bar and grill.

History of Tuscarora

Tuscarora was started in Elko County in 1867. A trader named William Heath led a trip to find gold, and that's how the community began. The name "Tuscarora" comes from the Tuscarora people.

Early Mining and Growth

As more miners came to the town, a fort was built to help protect them from attacks. A special ditch was also made to bring water to the town. Many Chinese men who used to work for the Central Pacific Railroad (CPR) moved to Tuscarora. They started looking for gold in the rivers and streams, a method called placer mining.

By 1870, Tuscarora had 119 people, and 104 of them were Chinese. A post office opened in Tuscarora in 1871. The town really grew when people found silver ore. In 1879, the number of people in Tuscarora reached 1,500. This made it one of the biggest places in Nevada at that time.

Later Mining Periods

Between 1883 and 1887, there was a second big time for mining. A lot of silver was found, just like during the first boom. This was because several new mines had been built in the 1870s. However, the mines built during this second boom didn't produce as much silver as before. Mining companies in Tuscarora started to slow down. Some mines, like the Young America mine, closed in the early 1890s.

Even with these closures, some mining companies kept working. In the late 1890s and early 1900s, more gold was found than silver. Later, in 1987, people started looking for tiny bits of gold. This led to a company called Horizon Gold opening a mine in 1989 to get silver and gold. This mine operated until 1991.

Education in Tuscarora

Tuscarora has two small schools. These schools are part of the Elko County School District. The community also has a public library. It is a part of the Elko-Lander-Eureka County Library System.
