The East Fork then flows north through towns like East Lynn, Wayne, and Lavalette.
West Fork's Journey
The West Fork flows north through Dunlow, West Virginia. It meets up with the East Fork in the town of Wayne.
Meeting the Ohio River
After the two forks join, the river continues to flow north. Finally, it empties into the Ohio River. This happens just east of Ceredo.
How Did Twelvepole Creek Get Its Name?
Early explorers gave Twelvepole Creek its name. A young George Washington might have been with one of these groups. They were traveling along the Ohio River. When they found the creek, they measured how wide it was at its mouth. They used a unit of measurement called a "pole" (also known as a "rod"). One pole is about 16.5 feet long. The creek was about 198 feet wide where it met the Ohio River. Since 198 feet is equal to 12 poles, they named it Twelvepole Creek!
