Tyrone Deon Mings (born on 13 March 1993) is an English professional footballer. He plays as a centre-back for the Premier League club Aston Villa and the England national team.

Mings started his football journey in non-League football. He played for clubs like Yate Town and Chippenham Town. Before that, he spent eight years in the Southampton youth academy. In 2012, he joined Ipswich Town. He made his professional debut in the 2012–13 season. After two more seasons with Ipswich, he moved to AFC Bournemouth in 2015. He played his first Premier League game in August 2015.

In 2019, Mings joined Aston Villa on loan. He helped them win promotion to the Premier League through the Championship play-offs. He then signed permanently with Aston Villa in July 2019. Mings was first called up to the senior England squad in August 2019. He made his debut for England in October 2019. In June 2021, he was part of the England squad for the UEFA Euro 2020 tournament.

Club career

Early career

Tyrone Mings was born in Bath, England. His father, Adie Mings, was also a non-League footballer. Tyrone joined Southampton's youth academy when he was eight years old in 2001. However, he was released in 2009. After leaving Southampton, he studied at Millfield school on a football scholarship for two years.

He then tried out for Eastleigh but did not get a contract. Mings then signed for a non-League club called Yate Town. In 2012, he thought about quitting football. But he decided to join Chippenham Town, the team from his hometown. While playing non-League football, Mings also worked as a barman and a mortgage advisor.

Ipswich Town

In December 2012, Mings signed with Ipswich Town. He joined after a short trial. Ipswich paid £10,000 for him and agreed to play a friendly game against Chippenham. On 4 May 2013, Mings played his first game for Ipswich. This was on the last day of the 2012–13 season against Burnley.

For the 2013–14 season, he was the backup left-back. He started the first game because the main left-back was suspended. On 4 January 2014, Mings played as a right-back in an FA Cup game. He made 18 appearances that season.

When Aaron Cresswell left Ipswich in July 2014, Mings was given the number 3 shirt. He even offered to buy new shirts for two fans who had already bought shirts with his old number 15. In summer 2014, Crystal Palace offered £3 million for Mings, but Ipswich said no. On 20 September 2014, Mings signed a new three-year contract with Ipswich.

He started the 2014–15 season as the main left-back. He was a very important player for the team that season. In October 2014, Mings won the Championship Player of the Month award for September. He scored his first goal for Ipswich on 24 February 2015. It was the first goal in a 4–2 win against Birmingham City. Mings played 44 games that season and scored once. He helped Ipswich reach the Championship play-offs.

AFC Bournemouth

On 26 June 2015, Mings joined AFC Bournemouth. They were a newly promoted Premier League club. He signed a four-year contract for a fee reported to be £8 million.

Mings made his Premier League debut for Bournemouth on 29 August 2015. It was a 1–1 draw with Leicester City. However, he got a serious knee injury just six minutes after coming on as a substitute. In September 2015, it was confirmed that his injury would keep him out of action for 9 to 12 months. He finally returned to play on 13 December 2016. This was 15 months after his injury, in a 1–0 win against Leicester City.

In March 2017, Mings was banned by the FA for five matches. This was after an incident during a game against Manchester United.

On 31 January 2019, Mings joined Aston Villa on loan for the rest of the season. He played his first game for Villa on 2 February against Reading. During this match, there was an incident where Mings accidentally stepped on the face of Reading player Nélson Oliveira. Oliveira had to leave the game due to injuries. Mings later said sorry, explaining it was not on purpose. The referee saw the incident and decided it was an accident, so no further action was taken.

Mings scored his first goal for Villa in his second game, on 8 February 2019. He scored in the 82nd minute against Sheffield United. Villa were losing 3–0 but came back to draw 3–3. Even though Villa were not playing well at the time, Mings stood out. He quickly became a fan favourite. Villa's performance improved when Jack Grealish returned from injury. They went on a ten-game winning streak. Mings scored the winning goal in a 2–1 win over Blackburn Rovers during this period. On 27 May 2019, Mings played in the 2019 Championship play-off final. He helped Villa beat Derby County 2–1 and get promoted to the Premier League.

Mings signed permanently for Aston Villa on 8 July 2019. The transfer fee was reported to be around £20 million, possibly rising to £25 million.

After the UK government announced that sports could restart, Mings said that players felt they were not properly consulted. He felt they were treated as "commodities in the game."

On 21 September 2020, Mings signed a new four-year contract with Aston Villa. After Jack Grealish left the club, Mings was named the new captain of Aston Villa on 14 August 2021. He had already been interim captain when Grealish was injured.

On 27 July 2022, Aston Villa manager Steven Gerrard decided to change the captain. John McGinn became the new captain. Gerrard said this would help Mings focus on his own game without the extra pressure. Mings said he was fine with the decision and only wanted what was best for the team.

On 12 August 2023, on the first day of the 2023–24 season, Mings suffered a serious knee injury. He had to be carried off the pitch on a stretcher.

After 420 days, Mings returned to football on 5 October 2024. He played for Aston Villa's Under-21 team against Newcastle. He played for 45 minutes. Mings returned to the first team on 30 October in an EFL Cup game against Crystal Palace.

On 6 November, Mings made a mistake on his Champions League debut. He picked up the ball in his own penalty area after a short goal kick, which led to a penalty. His manager, Unai Emery, called it "the biggest mistake I witnessed in my career."

International career

Tyrone Mings could play for England because he was born there. He could also play for Barbados because of his grandparents. His father had once turned down a call-up from Barbados.

Mings received his first call-up to the England senior squad in August 2019. This was for the UEFA Euro 2020 qualifiers against Bulgaria and Kosovo. He earned his first cap for England in October 2019. It was a 6–0 win away to Bulgaria. During this match, there were racist chants from Bulgarian fans. Mings reported this to captain Harry Kane, who then told the referee. This helped stop the chanting.

In June 2021, Mings was chosen for the England squad for the UEFA Euro 2020 tournament. He started England's first two group matches. He helped England keep a clean sheet in a 1–0 win against Croatia. He also helped them keep a clean sheet in a 0–0 draw against Scotland. He came on as a substitute in the final group match against the Czech Republic. England won 1–0 and finished top of their group.

After England lost the final to Italy on penalties, three England players faced online racist abuse. Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho, and Bukayo Saka had missed their penalties. Home Secretary Priti Patel said she was "disgusted" by the abuse. Mings replied to her on Twitter. He said she had encouraged such behaviour earlier by calling the players' anti-racism message of taking the knee "gesture politics." Mings' tweet said: "You don't get to stoke the fire at the beginning of the tournament by labelling our anti-racism message as 'Gesture Politics' & then pretend to be disgusted when the very thing we're campaigning against, happens."

On 15 November 2021, Mings scored his first goal for England. It was in a 10–0 away victory over San Marino in a 2022 FIFA World Cup qualification game.

Personal life

Off the football field, Tyrone Mings is known for his charity work. Ipswich Town's Supporters' Club praised him for it. On Christmas Day 2013, he spent time feeding homeless people. When he got a new shirt number at Ipswich, he bought new shirts for fans who had already bought ones with his old number. Mings also started his own youth football academy. It is called The Tyrone Mings Academy and is based in Birmingham, England. It helps children aged 6 to 16 learn football.

Outside of football, Mings also has a business interest. He is involved with an interior design company in Bournemouth.
