History of Uleybury
How Uleybury Got Its Name
The story of Uleybury begins with a man named Moses Bendle Garlick. He was a weaver, someone who made cloth by hand. Born around 1784, he fought in the Peninsular War against Napoleon. This war was part of the bigger Napoleonic Wars, which were a series of major conflicts in Europe.
After the war, Moses returned to England. He found that machines were now making cloth, which meant hand-made cloth was no longer popular. Because of this, he decided to move his family to South Australia in 1837. They traveled on a ship called Katherine Stewart Forbes.
Settling in South Australia
Moses first settled in North Adelaide. He worked there as a builder until at least 1848. Later, he bought land in an area called Munno Para East. He named this new home "Uley" after his home village of Uley in Gloucestershire, England. His family moved into their new home around 1850.
Moses's oldest son, Daniel Garlick, became an architect. He opened his business in nearby Gawler. Moses was a very religious man and a lay preacher for the Baptist church. In 1851, he gave one acre of his land to the church. He then built the Uley Chapel on this land, which cost £400. When Moses died on October 1, 1859, he was buried in the small cemetery next to the Chapel.
Uleybury School and Community
The settlement became known as "Uley Bury" or "Uleybury" around 1855. The Uleybury School was built in 1856 on land owned by the church. Reverend J. P. Buttfield ran it as a church school until 1874. After that, the government took over the school. It finally closed in 1971 but reopened as a museum in 1979.
The main office for the District Council of Munno Para East (which existed from 1853 to 1933) was located at the old Uley Chapel. The chapel itself was taken down in 1981.
