Ulrich "Uli" Hoeneß (born 5 January 1952) is a famous German football player and executive. He played as a forward, which is a player who tries to score goals. Uli Hoeneß is best known for his time with Bayern Munich.

He also played for the West Germany national team. With them, he won a FIFA World Cup and a UEFA European Championship. After his playing career, he became a very important leader at Bayern Munich. He served as the club's general manager and later as its president.

Early Life and Football Beginnings

Uli Hoeneß was born in Ulm, Germany. He grew up in Ulm with his family. His younger brother, Dieter, also became a professional football player and manager.

Uli started playing football at a young age. He joined the youth team of VfB Ulm. Later, he moved to TSG Ulm 1846, which is now SSV Ulm 1846. By the age of 15, he was already the captain of the German Football Association's school team.

Friendship with Paul Breitner

During his youth, Uli met Paul Breitner at a training camp. They became close friends. Later, they even shared an apartment in Munich. This friendship was important as they both became famous players for Bayern Munich and the national team.

Club Career Highlights

In 1970, when he was 18, Uli Hoeneß joined Bayern Munich. He was recruited by the team's manager, Udo Lattek. Uli quickly made a big impact on the team.

Success with Bayern Munich

During his time at Bayern, Uli Hoeneß helped the team win many important titles. He won three Bundesliga titles, which is the top German football league. He also won three European Cups, which is the biggest club competition in Europe.

In the 1973–74 European Cup final, Uli had an amazing game. He scored two goals in the replay match against Atlético Madrid, helping Bayern win 4–0.

In the 1975 European Cup final against Leeds United, Uli suffered a serious injury to his right knee. This injury was very tough for him. He never fully recovered from it.

In 1978, he was loaned to 1. FC Nürnberg to try and get more playing time. However, his knee injury did not get better. Because of this, he had to stop playing football at just 27 years old. He played in 250 matches in Germany's top league, scoring 86 goals.

Playing for West Germany

Uli Hoeneß played 35 times for the West Germany national team. He scored his first goal for the team in a friendly match against Hungary in 1972.

Winning Major Tournaments

Uli was part of a very successful West Germany team. He helped them win the UEFA Euro 1972 tournament. Two years later, he also won the 1974 FIFA World Cup with his country. In the World Cup final against Holland, West Germany won 2–1.

He also played in UEFA Euro 1976 in Yugoslavia. In the final, West Germany lost to Czechoslovakia in a penalty shootout.

Olympic Games Participation

On 15 November 2019, Uli Hoeneß retired as Bayern's president. Herbert Hainer took over his role. Uli Hoeneß spent a total of 49 years at Bayern, first as a player and then as a leader.

Personal Life

Uli Hoeneß is married to Susanne, and they have two children, Sabine and Florian. They have been married for over 40 years.

Uli's father was a master butcher. Uli now co-owns a company called HoWe Wurstwaren KG, which makes bratwurst sausages in Nuremberg. His younger brother, Dieter, also had a great career in football.

Helping Others

Uli Hoeneß has a history of helping other German football teams and former players. He has provided financial help to clubs like FC St. Pauli and Borussia Dortmund.
