Underwood is a small community in Washington state. It's located right along the famous Columbia River within the beautiful Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area. This area is known for its stunning views and outdoor activities. Underwood is an unincorporated community, which means it doesn't have its own city government. It's part of Skamania County.
The Story of Underwood
The community of Underwood is named after Amos Underwood. He was a pioneer, which means he was one of the first people to settle in this area. Amos and his brother, Edward Underwood, arrived here in 1865. They made their home near where the White Salmon River flows into the Columbia River.
A post office was opened in Underwood in 1900. This meant people living there could send and receive mail more easily. It's been helping the community connect with the rest of the world for over a hundred years!
Where is Underwood Located?
Underwood is found along Washington State Route 14, a highway that runs next to the Columbia River. It sits exactly where the White Salmon River meets the mighty Columbia River. This spot is in the very southeastern part of Skamania County.
If you look across the Columbia River from Underwood, you'll see the city of Hood River, Oregon. Underwood is also just about 2 miles (3.2 km) west of another Washington town called White Salmon, Washington. On a clear day, you can even see the tall, snowy peak of Mount Hood in Oregon from Underwood!
