The Pueblo Union Depot is a really old and important train station in Pueblo, Colorado. It was built a long time ago, between 1889 and 1890. The building has a special look called the Richardsonian Romanesque style. In 1975, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places. This means it's a very special building that needs to be protected. You can find it inside the Union Avenue Historic Commercial District, which is another historic area.

A Look at the Depot's Past

This train station has a rich history. When it first opened, many different train companies used it. These included the Denver & Rio Grande Western Railroad and the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway. Other companies like the Colorado & Southern Railway and the Missouri Pacific Railroad also stopped here.

Train Travel Then and Now

Back then, the depot was a busy place with many passenger trains coming and going. Today, things are a bit different. The Union Pacific Railroad and the BNSF Railroad still use the tracks, but the depot building is now privately owned. Regular passenger train service no longer runs from this station.

However, there are ideas to bring passenger trains back! One idea is the Front Range Commuter Rail. This would connect Pueblo to cities like Denver and Colorado Springs. There's also a suggestion for Amtrak's Southwest Chief train to stop at the depot.

Famous Visitors to the Depot

Over the years, many important people have arrived at the Pueblo Union Depot. Two former United States Presidents, Theodore Roosevelt and Woodrow Wilson, stepped off trains here. More recently, Vice-Presidential candidate Joe Biden and Presidential candidate John Kerry also visited the depot.
