The Upaunan River is a small river in Quebec, Canada. It flows into the Enistustikweyach River, which is part of a larger river system. This river is located in the Eeyou Istchee James Bay (municipality) area, which is in the Nord-du-Québec region.
The area around the Upaunan River is quite remote. There are no nearby roads to reach it directly. However, a main road from Matagami passes about 26.3 kilometres (16.3 mi) west of where the Upaunan River flows into another river. The river's surface is usually frozen from early November until mid-May. It's generally safe to travel on the ice from mid-November to mid-April.

River's Starting Point
The Upaunan River begins from a small stream that is surrounded by marshy land. This starting point is about 269 metres (883 ft) above sea level.
- It's located 1.6 kilometres (0.99 mi) southwest of Evans Lake.
- It's also about 8.3 kilometres (5.2 mi) northeast of where the Upaunan River ends.
- The source is 124 kilometres (77 mi) north of the town of Matagami.
How the River Flows
The Upaunan River travels for about 17.1 kilometres (10.6 mi) in total. It flows in two main parts:
- For the first 10.2 kilometres (6.3 mi), it flows towards the northwest, making a curve towards the northeast.
- Then, for the remaining 6.9 kilometres (4.3 mi), it flows towards the southwest until it reaches its mouth.
What "Upaunan" Means
The name "Upaunan River" comes from the Cree language. In Cree, the word "Upaunan" means "the river of the camp of the pass." This name likely describes a place where people would set up camp near a path or a way through the land.
The name "Upaunan River" was officially recognized on October 5, 1982, by the Commission de toponymie du Québec, which is the organization in Quebec responsible for naming places.
