Uppsala Municipality (which is called Uppsala kommun in Swedish) is a special area in Sweden. It works like a local government district. It is located in the middle-east part of Sweden, in a place called Uppsala County.
As of 2016, about 211,411 people lived in Uppsala Municipality. The main town, or "seat," of this municipality is Uppsala. This city is well-known for its university.
Uppsala Municipality was formed a long time ago. Many smaller local areas joined together in the late 1960s and early 1970s. About 30 smaller towns and villages combined to create the municipality we see today. Later, in 2003, a part of Uppsala Municipality became its own separate area. This new area is called Knivsta Municipality.
