Vadim Repin (born August 31, 1971) is a famous violin player from Russia and Belgium. He lives in Vienna, Austria.

Many people think Vadim Repin is one of the best violinists in the world. The famous violinist Yehudi Menuhin once said that Vadim Repin was "simply the best and most perfect violinist" he had ever heard.

Becoming a Violin Star

Vadim Repin was born in Novosibirsk, a city in Western Siberia, on August 31, 1971. He started playing the violin at a very young age.

When he was just 14 years old, he played his first big concerts in cities like Tokyo, Munich, Berlin, and Helsinki. A year later, he performed in the famous Carnegie Hall in New York City.

Vadim Repin's Career Highlights

When Vadim Repin was 17, he won the violin section of the Queen Elisabeth Music Competition in Brussels. This was a very important music contest, and he was the youngest person ever to win it. Later, in 2009, he even became a judge for the same competition.

Vadim Repin has played with many top conductors, who are the leaders of orchestras. Some of these famous conductors include Simon Rattle, Valery Gergiev, Mariss Jansons, and Yehudi Menuhin.

He often plays at big music events like the BBC Proms in London. In 2010, he played a brand new violin concerto (a special piece for violin and orchestra) by James MacMillan. This piece was written just for him!

Vadim Repin especially loves to play Russian music and French music. He is well-known for playing big violin concertos by Russian composers.

Vadim Repin has played many very special and valuable violins throughout his career. These violins are often loaned to him because they are so rare.

  • 1982-1984: A unique Stradivari violin, which was a three-quarter size. It was loaned from the Russian State Collection.
  • 1984–1989: A Stradivari violin from 1720, known as the "ex-Wieniawski-Wieniawski". This was also loaned from the Russian State Collection.
  • 1996: He briefly played a Guarneri del Gesù violin from 1737, called the "Isaac Stern ex-Panette-Panette". This was loaned by David Fulton.
  • 1996–2005: A Stradivari violin from 1708, known as the "Ruby". This was loaned by the Stradivari Society in Chicago and was once played by the famous violinist Pablo de Sarasate.
  • 2005: A Guarneri del Gesù violin from 1742, called "Il Cannone ex Paganini". This was loaned by the city of Genoa for a special concert.
  • 2002-2009: A Guarneri del Gesù violin from 1736, called "Von Szerdahely".
  • 2010-2013: A Guarneri del Gesù violin from 1743, called "Bonjour".
  • 2013-2015: A Guarneri del Gesù violin from 1736, called "Lafont".
  • Since 2015: Vadim Repin plays a Stradivari violin from 1733, known as "Rode".

He also uses special bows made by famous bow makers like Nicolaus Kittel and Nicolas Maline.

Vadim Repin's Family Life

Vadim Repin married Caroline Diemunsch in 2001, and their son Leonardo was born in 2006.

His current wife is Svetlana Zakharova, who is a very famous ballet dancer at the Bolshoi Ballet. They have a daughter, who was born in February 2011.
