Vilcún is a town and commune in Chile. Its name comes from the Mapudungun language, meaning "lizard." Vilcún is located in Cautín Province, within the Araucanía Region.
This town is a key starting point for visitors heading to Conguillío National Park and the Llaima volcano. The commune of Vilcún also includes smaller towns like Cherquenco, San Patricio, General López, and Cajón.

Vilcún's Population and Area
Vilcún covers an area of about 1,420.9 square kilometers. In 2002, a study by the National Statistics Institute showed that Vilcún had 22,491 people living there. This included 11,392 men and 11,099 women.
Most of the people, about 13,467 (nearly 60%), lived in rural areas. The remaining 9,024 people (about 40%) lived in urban areas. Between 1992 and 2002, the population of Vilcún grew by 7.7%, adding 1,604 more people.
How Vilcún is Governed
Vilcún is a commune, which is a local government area in Chile. It is managed by a municipal council. The leader of the council is called an alcalde, similar to a mayor. The alcalde is chosen by the people in an election every four years.
From 2008 to 2012, Patricio Villanueva Rubilar was the alcalde. He was a member of the PPD.
Vilcún in National Politics
Vilcún is part of a larger area for national elections.
- Chamber of Deputies: In the Chamber of Deputies, which is like one part of Chile's parliament, Vilcún is in the 49th electoral district. This district also includes other towns like Victoria, Curacautín, Lonquimay, Melipeuco, Lautaro, Perquenco, and Galvarino. The representatives for this district were Enrique Estay (UDI) and Fuad Chahín (PDC).
- Senate: For the Senate, which is the other part of Chile's parliament, Vilcún is in the 14th senatorial constituency. This area is known as Araucanía-North. The senators for this area were Alberto Espina Otero (RN) and Jaime Quintana Leal (PPD).
