Virginia Gardens is a small village located in Miami-Dade County, Florida, in the United States. It's part of the larger Miami metropolitan area in South Florida. In 2020, about 2,364 people lived there.

History of Virginia Gardens

In 1947, Virginia Gardens was actually part of a nearby city called Miami Springs. That city made a rule that people couldn't keep horses there anymore. About 50 people who owned horses decided to leave Miami Springs and create their own village.

The village was named Virginia Gardens because many of its first residents came from the state of Virginia. These early residents were often wealthy and owned large pieces of land, some as big as 5 acres (about 20,000 square meters). These large properties were perfect for keeping horses. Today, only one property of 1 acre (about 4,000 square meters) remains. Most homes now sit on smaller lots, typical of suburban neighborhoods.

Where is Virginia Gardens?

Virginia Gardens is located about 9 miles (14 kilometers) northwest of downtown Miami. You can find it at these coordinates: 25.809175 degrees North and -80.296697 degrees West.

The village shares its northern and eastern borders with the city of Miami Springs. To the south, it is next to Miami International Airport. The United States Census Bureau says that Virginia Gardens covers a total area of about 0.3 square miles (0.76 square kilometers), and all of it is land.
