A vole is a small mouse-like mammal. It is a type of rodent that belongs to a group called Arvicolinae. Voles are found in many different places around the world.

What is a Vole?

Voles are small rodents that look a lot like mice. They are part of the same family as lemmings and muskrats. These animals are known for their short tails and small ears.

There are about 155 different species of voles. They come in various sizes. Adult voles are usually 7.5 to 17.5 centimetres (three to seven inches) long.

Where Do Voles Live?

Voles live in many parts of the world. You can find them in Europe, Asia, North Africa, and North America. They like to live in woodlands and grasslands.

They often dig tunnels underground. These tunnels help them find food and stay safe from predators. Voles are very good at adapting to different environments.

What Do Voles Eat?

Voles are mostly plant-eaters. Their diet includes seeds, grass, and other plants. Sometimes, they also eat insects.

They spend a lot of time searching for food. Their diet helps them get the energy they need to survive.

Who Hunts Voles?

Many different animals hunt voles. This is because voles are a common food source for predators. Some of their main hunters include owls and hawks.

Other animals that hunt voles are coyotes, foxes, weasels, cats, and snakes. Voles have to be very careful to avoid these predators.

How Long Do Voles Live?

The lifespan of a vole can be quite short. Smaller vole species usually live for only three to six months. They rarely live longer than 12 months.

Larger species, like the European water vole, can live longer. They often survive through their second winter. Sadly, many voles, up to 88%, do not live past their first month.
