Volkmar Groß's Football Journey

Starting His Career

Volkmar Groß was born in Berlin. He started his football career in 1967 with the club Hertha BSC. In 1971, there was a problem with some football matches. Because of this, Groß was suspended from the Bundesliga for two years. He was also not allowed to play for the national team ever again.

Playing Abroad

During his two-year suspension, Volkmar Groß played for Hellenic FC in South Africa. At that time, South Africa was not a member of FIFA. This was due to UN sanctions against the country. This meant he could play there without breaking his suspension rules.

Return to Germany and Move to the USA

In 1977, Volkmar Groß returned to Germany. He joined the team Tennis Borussia Berlin. In 1979, he moved to the United States. He signed with the Minnesota Kicks team. This team was part of the North American Soccer League.

He started that season with Minnesota. However, he finished it playing for the San Diego Sockers. He played for the Sockers for many seasons. This included five outdoor seasons and two indoor seasons in the NASL. He also played one season in the Major Indoor Soccer League. He stopped playing football in 1984.

Volkmar Groß passed away on July 3, 2014, after being ill for a long time.
