Vulcan used to have nine grain elevators. This was more than any other place west of Winnipeg. It was a very important place for shipping grain. Over time, the original elevators were taken down. Today, only one of these tall wooden buildings remains. This last elevator was built in the 1980s.

During Second World War, an air force base was near Vulcan. It was called RCAF Station Vulcan. Many old hangars are still there. You can also still see the runways. Today, it is used as Vulcan/Kirkcaldy Aerodrome. There is also a second airport called Vulcan Airport.

In 2015, the town council created a Heritage Advisory Board Committee. This group helps manage historical sites in Vulcan County.
