The History of Washbrook
How Washbrook Got Its Name
The name "Washbrook" has a special meaning. It means 'Washing brook' or 'flooding brook'. This suggests there was a stream or river nearby that was used for washing, or one that would sometimes flood.
Washbrook in Early Times
Long ago, during Saxon times, Washbrook was known by a different name. It was called "Great Belstead." At that time, the area we now call Belstead was known as "Little Belstead." The village of Washbrook is also thought to be where the surname Washbrook comes from.
Changes Over the Years
In 1958, a place called Washbrook Street was a smaller settlement connected to the main village. The population of Washbrook was 368 people in 1961.
A big change happened on April 1, 1994. The old parish of Washbrook was officially ended. It joined with the nearby village of Copdock to create the new parish of Copdock and Washbrook. Parts of Washbrook also became part of other parishes. These included Pinewood, Chattisham, Sproughton, and Belstead.
