Exploring Waterford West
Waterford West is found on the west side of the Logan River. It's also west of another suburb called Waterford. The Logan River actually forms part of the suburb's eastern and southern edges.
Local Spots and Landmarks
You'll find Marsden State High School in the western part of Waterford West. There's also a shopping centre called Waterford Plaza. It's located near a bridge that crosses the Logan River. This area is a busy spot where two main roads, Kingston Road and Loganlea Road, meet. Right next to the shopping centre is a big lagoon known as Tygum Lagoon. It's a beautiful natural feature!
A Look Back: History of Waterford West
Waterford West has an interesting past. Back in April 1885, some land in the area was put up for sale. It was known as Waterford North and South. Maps from that time show the land was close to railway lines and the Logan River. The land had a quarry (where stone is dug out) and a sawmill (where timber is cut). There were also two lagoons with fresh water.
Growing into a Suburb
People started building homes in Waterford West in the 1970s. A drive-in movie theatre was even built in 1974. That same year, a big flood hit Brisbane. Waterford West was affected, and two houses were washed away. But luckily, the bridge stayed strong!
In 1978, the area known as Waterford was divided into two parts. Waterford West officially became its own suburb in 1987.
Schools Open Their Doors
The Waterford West State School opened its doors to students on January 27, 1976. Later, Marsden State High School welcomed its first students on January 27, 1987.
