Waterford is on the east side of the Logan River. It is about 7 kilometers (4.3 miles) south-east of Logan Central. The Logan River forms the western edge of the suburb. Dairy Creek Road marks the southern border. This road connects to Gardiner Road and then to Logan River Road. Waterford-Tamborine Road (State Route 95) begins in the north of Waterford and heads south.

How Waterford Got Its Name

Waterford is thought to be named by early Irish settlers. They likely named it after Waterford in Ireland. This was because of a place where people could cross the Logan River. A surveyor named William Fryar wrote down the name on June 11, 1866. The first land lots in the town were sold in July 1866.

Early Schools in Waterford

Logan Provisional School opened on June 28, 1869. It started in Charles Wilson's barn. There were 22 students at first. On January 3, 1871, the school moved to a new building. It was then called Waterford Primary School. It had 25 students. Later, its name changed to Waterford State School.

The Railway Connection

The Beaudesert railway line opened on September 21, 1885. It ran from Bethania to Beaudesert. Waterford railway station served the town. People stopped using the train for travel in 1961. This was because more people started using cars. Freight services, which carry goods, continued until May 20, 1996.

Canterbury College: A Local School

The College of the Good Shepherd started on February 2, 1987. Local Anglican Church families wanted a faith-based school. It opened with 73 students in Years 6 to 8. The school's first permanent buildings were ready in late 1987. It was later renamed Canterbury College.
