Waterways Ireland is an organization that takes care of the beautiful rivers and canals across the entire island of Ireland. Its name in the Irish language is Uiscebhealaí Éireann and in Ulster-Scots it's Watterweys Airlann.
This group was created in 1999 as part of the Belfast Agreement, a special agreement to help Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland work together. Waterways Ireland is one of six groups, called North/South implementation bodies, that were set up to manage things for the whole island.
The main job of Waterways Ireland is to look after the inland waterways. They manage, maintain, and improve them so people can enjoy them for fun activities like boating, fishing, and walking.
