History of Weimar
The Weimar post office first opened in 1866. The town was originally called "New England Mills."
The name "Weimar" comes from George Geisendorfer, who helped found the town. He was born near Weimar, Germany. Many of the first people living in New England Mills were also from Germany.
George Geisendorfer decided to change the town's name to Weimar. This happened after the post office did not accept the name "New England Mills."
In 1919, after World War I, some people wanted to change the name again to "Argonne." But this idea was stopped. A local senator said the name "Weimar" was not German. He said it came from "Weimah," a Native American chief. This chief was friendly to the first settlers in the area. The senator also said that the postal service had spelled the name wrong.
