Geography of West Rutland
West Rutland is located in the middle of Rutland County. It sits in a valley. This valley is on the east side of the Taconic Mountains.
Rivers and Waterways
Two main rivers flow near West Rutland. The Clarendon River flows to the east. It is a smaller river that joins Otter Creek. The Castleton River flows to the west. It joins the Poultney River. Both of these river systems eventually flow into Lake Champlain. Lake Champlain is a large freshwater lake. It is located between Vermont and New York.

- Route 4 also goes west about 13 miles (21 km) to Fair Haven.

- It goes west about 7 miles (11 km) to Castleton.
