Green House; West Sayville, New York
West Sayville's historic Greene House

The Greene House is a very old building at 93 Montauk Highway. It is said that George Washington himself stopped at this house in 1790 to rest during a trip around Long Island.

Edith Corse Evans was a wealthy woman who had a summer home in West Sayville. She was a passenger on the famous ship, the Titanic. When the Titanic sank on April 15, 1912, Edith Corse Evans bravely gave up her seat on the last lifeboat. She did this to save Caroline Brown, a mother with six children. Edith Evans lost her life, but her selfless act saved Caroline Brown.

The West Sayville Radio Station was built in 1912 on Cherry Avenue. It was a German Telefunken wireless transmitter used to send messages, mainly to Germany. In 1915, it was believed that this transmitter sent a message from the German Embassy to "get Lucy." This message might have referred to the RMS Lusitania, which was sunk on May 7.

The US government became concerned about these signals. Their worries grew when the station was used to send the Zimmermann Telegram on January 16, 1917. This secret message from Germany asked Mexico to help invade the United States during World War I. Because of this, President Woodrow Wilson sent Marines to take control of the wireless station. This was to stop any more secret messages from being sent. This action was the first hostile step the United States took against Germany in World War I. Today, the land where the transmitter once stood is part of the Sayville National Wildlife Refuge.
