History of Westfield

The Westfield area was first settled in 1802 by a man named James McMahan. He came from Pennsylvania. McMahan built a mill near where Chautauqua Creek flows into Lake Erie. This mill was taken apart before the War of 1812 so that British soldiers couldn't use it. Today, some of the millstones from McMahan's mill are outside the Patterson Library in Westfield village.

The town of Westfield was officially created in 1828. It was formed from parts of two other towns: Portland and Ripley.

Barcelona Lighthouse

The Barcelona Lighthouse was built in 1829. It helped guide ships on Lake Erie. This lighthouse was special because it was the first in the world to be powered by natural gas. It was used until 1859.

Grape Industry

In 1897, Charles E. Welch, who started Welch's Grape Juice, moved his company to Westfield from New Jersey. He did this because the climate in Westfield was perfect for growing grapes, especially Concord grapes. Soon, the area became well-known for growing grapes used to make both wine and grape juice.

Historic Buildings

Westfield has many historic buildings. Twenty of them are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. This means they are important historical sites. All but one of these buildings were added to the list in 1983. The Barcelona Lighthouse was added earlier, in 1972.
