Exploring Wheatham Hill
Much of Wheatham Hill is covered with a mix of trees. You can find a special marker called a "trig point" near the top. This point is 244 meters high. It's also known as Cobbett's View.
Cobbett's Amazing View
The great views from this hilltop were first noticed in 1822. A writer named William Cobbett rode through here. He later wrote about his journey in a book called "Rural Rides".
Cobbett was very surprised and happy with the view. He wrote that it was like looking from a castle down into the sea. But instead of water, he saw a beautiful valley of land.
For many years, trees grew tall and hid this amazing view. But an old trig point showed that the view used to be clear. This trig point helped mapmakers from the OS create maps.
In 2010, Countryside Rangers cut down some of these trees. This helped bring back the spectacular views that Cobbett loved so much.
Nature and History
There is a small path that goes over the top of Wheatham Hill. The hill is part of a special natural area. This area is called the East Hampshire Hangers. It is a Special Area of Conservation. This means it is protected for its important plants and animals.
On the southeast side of the hill, in the woods, there is an ancient burial mound. This mound is called a tumulus. It shows that people lived in this area a very long time ago.
Nearby Hills
Stoner Hill is another hill close by. It is a smaller part of Wheatham Hill. Stoner Hill is about 233 meters (764 feet) tall.
