Wheelers Bay is a pretty little bay on the south-east coast of the Isle of Wight, England. It's located just east of the town of Ventnor. The bay faces south-east towards the English Channel and has a shoreline about 300 yards long. Part of the bay, near the boat ramp, is used to store boats when they're not in the water. You'll also find a lovely outdoor cafe called The Seapot right by the bay.
You can get to Wheelers Bay by walking down a concrete path from the road above. You can also walk along the seawall from Ventnor or from Horseshoe Bay. The Isle of Wight Coastal Path follows the seawall right through the bay.
Exploring the History of Wheelers Bay
In the 1800s, Wheelers Bay and Horseshoe Bay were busy places for bringing goods ashore. Boats would come in at high tide and unload their cargo, like coal, onto horse-drawn carts. When the tide came back in, the boats would float away again. The bay was also known for people collecting items from shipwrecks that washed ashore.
Protecting the Coastline: Sea Defences
In the early 1990s, the sea defences at Wheelers Bay were made stronger. This project cost about £1.6 million. The goal was to protect the cliffs from erosion, which is when the land slowly wears away. The new defences include a large rock barrier weighing 15,500 tonnes. It also has 23,000 tonnes of chalk material to help keep the cliffs safe.
