The white-throated manakin (Corapipo gutturalis) is a small, colorful bird that lives in the forests of South America. It belongs to a family of birds called Pipridae, known for their bright feathers and cool courtship dances. You can find these birds in countries like Brazil, French Guiana, Guyana, Suriname, and Venezuela. They love to live in warm, wet habitats, especially in subtropical or tropical moist lowland forests.

Have you ever wondered how animals get their names? It's a bit like a detective story! The white-throated manakin was first described way back in 1760 by a French zoologist named Mathurin Jacques Brisson. He wrote about it in his book Ornithologie. He gave it the French name Le manakin à gorge blanche, which means "the white-throated manakin." He also used a Latin name, Manacus gutture albo.

How Birds Get Their Scientific Names

Later, in 1766, a famous Swedish scientist named Carl Linnaeus updated his very important book, Systema Naturae. This book was special because it used a new way of naming living things called the binomial nomenclature system. This system gives every species two Latin names: a genus name and a species name. It's like a first name and a last name for every plant and animal!

Linnaeus added many new species to his book, including the white-throated manakin. He gave it the scientific name Pipra gutturalis. The word gutturalis comes from Medieval Latin and means "of the throat," which makes sense for a bird with a white throat! Today, scientists place this bird in the genus Corapipo. This genus was created by another French naturalist, Charles Lucien Bonaparte, in 1854. The white-throated manakin is currently the only species in its group, which means it's monotypic.
