Discover Whitehill's Past
Whitehill has an interesting history. It is located on a main road that connected Petersfield and Farnham. This road is now known as the A325. Long ago, there was a guesthouse called the Prince of Wales in this area.
How Whitehill Grew
Between 1899 and 1903, two important military camps were built nearby. These were Bordon Camp and Longmoor Military Camp. Whitehill was located right between these two camps. Because of this, the village began to grow and develop.
Becoming an Official Parish
Whitehill became an official civil parish in 1928. Before that, it was part of the parishes of Headley and Selborne. By 1931, Whitehill had a population of 4,661 people. They lived in 631 homes.
In 1932, a police station and a court house were built in Whitehill. However, court hearings later moved to Alton. In 1991, the local council changed its name to Whitehill Town Council.
Getting Around Whitehill
Whitehill and Bordon are both located along the busy A325 road. The A3 road, which connects London to Portsmouth, also passes through the parish. However, it does not go directly through the village itself.
Road Travel Improvements
In July 2011, the Hindhead Tunnel was completed. This tunnel made it much easier to travel by road to London. It also helped reduce traffic on the A325. Before the tunnel, many drivers used the A325 through Bordon to avoid traffic jams in Hindhead.
Train and Bus Connections
The nearest train station to Whitehill is at Liss. It is about 4 miles (6.4 km) southeast of the town. Whitehill used to have its own train station, called Whitehill Junction railway station. This station was part of the Longmoor Military Railway, but it closed in 1969.
There have been ideas to build a new railway line to serve the town. The Rail Delivery Group has suggested this possibility.
For bus travel, there used to be a bus that connected to Liphook railway station. This service stopped in May 2009. Now, the Stagecoach South bus 18 travels through Whitehill. It goes from Haslemere to Farnham and Aldershot. The Stagecoach bus 13 also passes through Whitehill. It travels between Liphook and Alton.
