History of Whitesboro-Burleigh
Whitesboro was started around 1901 by a group called the Equitable Industrial Association. This group included important African American investors like the writer Paul Laurence Dunbar and the educator Booker T. Washington. The main investor and the person the town was named after was George Henry White. He was a lawyer and had been the last Black Republican congressman from North Carolina.
White and his partners wanted to create a place where Black people could live and work without facing unfair treatment, especially the discrimination common in the southern states at that time. They sold shares in this new community to African Americans from states like North and South Carolina and Virginia.
Historical Discoveries
In 2006, the Johnson Family Historical Trust found an old deed (a legal paper showing ownership) for property in Whitesboro. This deed was from George H. White's company. An expert called it one of "America's Untold Treasures."
The Johnson Family Historical Trust also has other rare items important to Whitesboro's history. For example, they have a 1936 radio that belonged to James L. Johnson, who was a famous ham radio operator. His radios are important for understanding the history of technology in Whitesboro and the country.
There are more than 50 known historical items from the original investors of the town. These items are planned to be shown in Whitesboro in the future. The Johnson Family Historical Trust also plans to dig for more historical objects at different sites in Whitesboro.
