History of Wileroltigen

Wileroltigen was first mentioned in official records in 1263. Back then, it was called Wiler sita prope Oltingen. For a time, it was also known by its French name, Ostranges, but this name is no longer used.

Early History and Land Ownership

During the Early Middle Ages, the land around Wileroltigen belonged to St. Maurice's Abbey. In 962, the Abbey gave this land to Payerne Priory. Payerne Priory owned the land until the 1200s.

Later, a powerful local family, the Herrschaft of Oltigen, took over the land. In 1412, the entire Oltigen area, including Wileroltigen, became part of Bern.

Joining the Bailiwick of Laupen

Wileroltigen was then grouped with the nearby villages of Gurbrü and Golaten. Together, they formed a court in the bailiwick of Laupen.

By 1325, Wileroltigen shared a bridge over the Saane/Sarine River with a village called Marfeldingen. This village is now part of the Mühleberg municipality. In the 1400s, the bridge was replaced by a ferry.

The Reformation and Modern Times

In 1528, Wileroltigen and the local parish church in Kerzers adopted the Protestant Reformation. This meant they changed their religious practices. The village's St. Mary Magdalene chapel was no longer used after this change.

A village school was opened in Wileroltigen in 1659. After the Act of Mediation in 1803, Wileroltigen officially became part of the Canton of Bern. This happened even though the Canton of Fribourg wanted it to be part of their canton.
