Will Campuzano's Fighting Journey
How Will Campuzano Started in MMA
Will Campuzano discovered mixed martial arts while he was in college. He used to get into fights on the street. In college, he took a Tae Kwon Do class. There, he met Tom Seabourne, who introduced him to Marcus Lanier. Marcus Lanier was a professional MMA fighter. He needed an assistant who could speak Spanish. Marcus had just opened his own fighting school. This is how Will Campuzano got into the world of MMA.
Early Success in His Career
Will Campuzano had a great start to his mixed martial arts career. He won his first six fights. All of these wins came by "stoppage," meaning the fight ended early. This could be by knockout or submission.
Fighting in World Extreme Cagefighting (WEC)
Will Campuzano made his debut in the WEC. This happened at WEC 43 in October 2009. He stepped in at the last minute to fight Damacio Page. Page won the fight by submission in the first round.
In his next WEC fight, Campuzano faced Coty Wheeler. This fight took place on January 10, 2010, at WEC 46. Campuzano won by a "unanimous decision." This means all the judges agreed he won. This exciting fight also earned the Fight of the Night award.
Later, Campuzano was scheduled to fight Rafael Rebello. But instead, he fought former WEC Bantamweight Champion Eddie Wineland. Campuzano lost this fight in the second round.
Competing in the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC)
In October 2010, the WEC joined with the UFC. All WEC fighters, including Campuzano, moved to the UFC. Campuzano's first UFC fight was on December 4, 2010. He fought Nick Pace at The Ultimate Fighter: Team GSP vs. Team Koscheck Finale. This was meant to be the first bantamweight fight in UFC history. However, Pace weighed too much, so it became a "catchweight" fight. Campuzano lost this fight by a special choke hold.
Campuzano then fought Chris Cariaso on January 22, 2011. For this fight, Campuzano trained with Urijah Faber and his team, Team Alpha Male. He lost the fight by unanimous decision. After this loss, he was released from the UFC.
Becoming a Champion in Legacy Fighting Championship
Will Campuzano had fought in Legacy FC before. He returned to Legacy FC after his time in the UFC. He defeated Jimmy Flick in the main event of LFC 16. This win made him the first-ever Flyweight Champion for Legacy FC.
Campuzano successfully defended his Legacy FC title. He beat Allan Nascimento by unanimous decision at LFC 19. This title defense happened on April 12, 2013.
Returning to the UFC
After winning five fights in a row outside the UFC, Campuzano got another chance. He returned to the UFC on short notice. He stepped in to fight Sergio Pettis at UFC 167 in November 2013. Campuzano lost this fight by unanimous decision.
Campuzano was set to fight Darrell Montague at UFC 171 in March 2014. But Montague got injured. Justin Scoggins replaced him. Campuzano lost this fight by unanimous decision as well. After this, he was released from the UFC again.
After His UFC Career
