Willie "Satellite" Totten (born July 4, 1962) is a famous American football coach. He used to be a star quarterback in college. Today, he coaches quarterbacks at Southern University.

Willie Totten played college football for the Mississippi Valley State Delta Devils. He was an amazing quarterback. He played with Jerry Rice, who became a legendary wide receiver. Together, they broke many football records. In 1984, their team scored an average of 59 points per game! Totten threw for a record 58 touchdowns that year. This led his team to the NCAA Division I-AA playoffs. Their coach, Archie Cooley, created a special offense that used Totten's passing skills.

Totten also served as the head football coach for Mississippi Valley State from 2002 to 2009.

Willie Totten's Early Life and College Days

Willie Totten grew up in Mississippi. He played high school football at J. Z. George High School. He then went on to become a college football star.

Willie Totten's Professional Playing Career

After college, Totten played professional football. He played in the Canadian Football League (CFL) for the BC Lions and Toronto Argonauts. Later, he joined the National Football League (NFL). He played for the Buffalo Bills in 1987. He played in two games and started one.

Totten also played in the Arena Football League (AFL). He played for the Chicago Bruisers, Pittsburgh Gladiators, and the New Orleans Night. In 1988, his team, the Chicago Bruisers, made it to ArenaBowl II. They lost to the Detroit Drive. His best AFL season was in 1989 with the Pittsburgh Gladiators. He threw for 13 touchdowns in just four games. He finished his arena football career with 1665 passing yards and 23 passing touchdowns.

Willie Totten's Coaching Journey

Willie Totten earned his master's degree at Grambling State University. He started his coaching career there as a graduate assistant. He worked under the famous head coach Eddie Robinson.

Totten returned to his old college, Mississippi Valley State. He coached quarterbacks and running backs in the 1990s. After two years coaching high school football, he came back to Mississippi Valley State in 2000. He became the head coach in 2001. He helped bring success back to the Delta Devils. They had winning seasons in 2005 and 2006.

Totten left his head coaching role in 2009. He took an administrative job at the university in 2010. In 2013, he became the quarterbacks coach at Albany State University. The next year, he moved to Alabama A&M University as their quarterbacks coach. In 2019, Totten returned to Mississippi Valley State again. He served as an assistant head coach and quarterbacks coach. Since 2023, he has been the quarterbacks coach at Southern University.

Honors and Achievements

Willie Totten has received many honors. He is one of the few college football coaches to coach in a stadium named after him. The Delta Devils play in Rice–Totten Stadium. It is named for him and his former teammate, Jerry Rice.

Totten is also a member of the College Football Hall of Fame. This is a very special honor for college football players and coaches. He is also a member of the Phi Beta Sigma fraternity.

Willie Totten was the head coach for the Mississippi Valley State Delta Devils from 2002 to 2009. During his time as head coach, his overall record was 31 wins and 57 losses. He helped the team improve and achieve winning seasons in 2005 and 2006.
