Wilmington is a city in Ohio, United States. It is the main city and county seat of Clinton County. In 2020, about 12,664 people lived there.

Wilmington is home to Wilmington College. This college was started in 1870 by a group called the Quakers. The city and its nearby areas have many Quaker meeting houses. Wilmington also has a special weather office that helps forecast weather for parts of Ohio, Kentucky, and Indiana.

The area was first called Clinton in 1810. It became the main town for the new Clinton County. Its name was changed to Wilmington in 1811. The town officially became a village in 1828.

By 1833, Wilmington had many buildings. These included a brick courthouse, a jail, and four churches. There were also stores, taverns, and about 100 homes.

Wilmington was featured in Time magazine in 1997. The article said it was a nice small town for families. It was also listed in a 1995 book called The 100 Best Small Towns in America.

In 2010, Wilmington had 12,520 people living there. There were 5,072 households. The city's population density was about 1,150 people per square mile.

Most residents were White (88.3%). Other groups included African American (6.1%) and Asian (0.8%). About 2.6% of the population was Hispanic or Latino.

About 31.6% of households had children under 18. The average age in the city was 33.7 years. About 23.5% of residents were under 18.

Wilmington's Economy

In the 1950s, Wilmington became home to several U.S. Department of Defense facilities. The most important was the Clinton County Air Force Base. After it closed in 1971, the city's economy struggled.

In 1979, Airborne Express bought the old air force base. They spent over $250 million to build a large shipping hub. This included new sorting centers and a long runway. It also had aircraft hangars and offices for about 6,000 employees.

In 2003, Airborne Express changed its name to ABX Air. ABX Air worked with DHL, a big international shipping company. DHL moved its main U.S. operations to Wilmington in 2005. However, in 2008, DHL closed its Wilmington hub. This led to many job losses.

The airport now has a smaller maintenance and engineering business. It employs several hundred people.

Green Enterprise Zone

In 2009, Wilmington became the first city in the U.S. to create a "Green Enterprise Zone." This helps new businesses that focus on environmentally friendly jobs. This idea came from two Wilmington High School graduates.

The AZEK Company has a factory in Wilmington. They make outdoor decking and railing from recycled materials. In 2018, they opened a new plant at the Wilmington Airpark. This plant recycles plastic into raw material for their products.

Healthcare and Shipping

Wilmington is also home to CMH Regional Health System. This includes Clinton Memorial Hospital. The hospital has 95 beds and offers many services. These include an emergency room, surgery, and cancer treatment.

The city is also a center for truck freight. R+L Carriers, a large trucking company, has its main office here.

Wilmington is close to larger cities like Dayton, Cincinnati, and Columbus. The city hosts fun annual events. The Banana Split Festival celebrates the treat, which some say was invented in Wilmington in 1907. The Clinton County Corn Festival celebrates the area's farming history.

The historic Murphy Theatre is in downtown Wilmington. It opened in 1918. Parts of the movie Lost In Yonkers were filmed there. The theater hosts plays, musicals, and classic movie screenings. The General Denver Hotel nearby is named after General James W. Denver. He was the founder of Denver, Colorado.

Sports in Wilmington

Wilmington is home to Wilmington College. Their sports teams are called the Quakers. They compete in NCAA Division III sports. In 2004, the Wilmington College women's basketball team won a national championship. In 2008, the college's football stadium, Williams Stadium, was updated with new lights and an artificial field.

The Wilmington City Schools system includes several elementary schools. It also has Rodger O. Borror Middle School and Wilmington High School. The school district is the largest in Clinton County. Most students from Wilmington High School go on to college.

Wilmington has two college campuses. Wilmington College is a Quaker-founded school. It focuses on liberal arts, peace, and understanding. It offers majors in agriculture and education. Southern State Community College also has a campus in Wilmington. It focuses on health sciences like nursing.

The city also has a branch of the Wilmington Public Library system.

Wilmington has a daily newspaper called the News Journal. There are also two local radio stations:

Transportation in Wilmington

Wilmington is located about 35 miles southeast of Dayton. It is also about 50 miles northeast of Cincinnati and 60 miles southwest of Columbus. Several main roads pass through the city, including US Route 68 and US Route 22.

The Airborne Airpark is the city's airport. It handles a lot of cargo flights. However, it does not have passenger flights. Freight train service is provided by the Indiana and Ohio Railway.

Wilmington also has its own public transportation system. It is called WTS (Wilmington Transit Systems). It helps people get around the city.
