Wingo is a small city located in Graves County, Kentucky, in the United States. In 2020, about 573 people lived there. It's known as a 'home rule-class city,' which means it has some power to make its own local laws.

Wingo's Early Days

Wingo started in 1854 as a stop for trains. It was part of the New Orleans and Ohio Railroad line. This railroad later became part of the Illinois Central.

The city was first called "Wingo's Station." It was named after Jerman J. Wingo, a local landowner. He gave the land for the train station. In 1862, a post office moved to the station. The city officially became a city in 1872. The word "Station" was removed from its name in 1882.

Where is Wingo?

Wingo is located in a part of Kentucky. It is about 10 miles (16 km) southwest of Mayfield. Mayfield is the main city of Graves County. Wingo is also about 13 miles (21 km) northeast of Fulton.

A main road, U.S. Route 45, goes right through Wingo. This road connects Wingo to Mayfield and Fulton. Also, Interstate 69 (which used to be called the Purchase Parkway) is just west of Wingo. You can get to Wingo from Exit 14 on this highway.

The United States Census Bureau says that Wingo covers a total area of about 0.98 square miles (2.5 square kilometers). Most of this area is land. Only a very small part, about 0.01 square miles (0.02 square kilometers), is water.
