History of Winnebago
The first post office in Winnebago opened in 1867. The village got its name from the Winnebago tribe. This tribe is officially recognized by the government. Their own name for themselves, or autonym, is Ho-Chunk. The Ho-Chunk tribe has a special land area called a reservation in Thurston County. In the Hoocąk language, the village is called Nįšoc.

- John Raymond Rice (1914-1950) - He was a Ho-Chunk veteran of the US Army. He was a casualty in the Korean War.
- Lillian St. Cyr (1884-1974) - Also known as Princess Red Wing, she was a Winnebago (Ho-Chunk) actress. She starred in the 1914 film The Squaw Man.
