Wolfgang Fahrian (born May 31, 1941 – died April 13, 2022) was a German professional football player. He was known for playing as a goalkeeper.
Playing Career Highlights
Wolfgang Fahrian started his football journey as a defender. Later, he became a goalkeeper because his team, TSG Ulm 1846, needed one. This happened in the early 1960s.
He quickly became very good in his new role. In April 1962, he was chosen to play for the West Germany national team. This was a big surprise because he was not playing in the top league at the time.
Fahrian played against Uruguay and did not let any goals in. This great performance led to him being picked for the 1962 FIFA World Cup squad. Many thought Hans Tilkowski would be the main goalkeeper. However, Fahrian was chosen to start all the games in the World Cup.
The 1962 World Cup was not very successful for West Germany. They only reached the quarter-finals. After the World Cup, Fahrian's career became less steady. He played for several teams and made 67 appearances in the Bundesliga, which is Germany's top football league. He played for the West Germany national team until 1964, earning ten caps (games played).
Life as a Sports Agent
After his playing career, Wolfgang Fahrian became a sports agent. A sports agent helps athletes manage their careers. They find teams for players and handle their contracts. Fahrian was very successful in this new job.
In 2006, he worked as an executive for ROGON Sportmanagement. This was one of the biggest sports agencies in German football. He helped many famous players, including Kevin Kurányi, Marcelo Bordon, Fabian Ernst, Halil Altıntop, Tim Wiese, and Roque Junior.
Death
Wolfgang Fahrian passed away on April 13, 2022. He was 80 years old. He died from pneumonia.
