Wright Sound facts for kids
Wright Sound is a cool waterway located on the North Coast of British Columbia, Canada. It's about 135 kilometers (84 miles) south of a city called Prince Rupert. This sound is found at the southern end of the Grenville Channel. It sits between three islands: Gil Island, Gribbell Island, and Pitt Island.
A small community called Hartley Bay is located on the northern side of Wright Sound. This town is home to the Gitga'ata, who are part of the Tsimshian group. The Douglas Channel also starts on the north side of Wright Sound.

What is the Inside Passage?
Wright Sound is an important part of the Inside Passage. This is a long, protected water route that connects Alaska, British Columbia, and Washington State. Imagine a highway on water, but instead of cars, it's for boats!
Why is the Inside Passage special?
The Inside Passage is much safer for ships than the open ocean. This is because it's protected by many coastal islands. These islands block the big waves and strong winds from places like Queen Charlotte Sound, Hecate Strait, and the Dixon Entrance. These other areas are directly open to the huge Pacific Ocean.
Ships and Travel in Wright Sound
Many different types of ships use Wright Sound and the Inside Passage. It's a busy place for water travel!
Who travels through Wright Sound?
- BC Ferries: This company carries people, cars, and supplies to and from many small towns in the area. It's like a bus service, but on water!
- Cruise Ships: Big cruise ships also travel through here. People on vacation enjoy the beautiful scenery.
- Alaska Marine Highway: This is another ferry system, similar to BC Ferries, that connects places in Alaska.
What about the Queen of the North?
On March 22, 2006, a BC Ferries ship called the M/V Queen of the North sank in Wright Sound. It was a very serious event. The people of Hartley Bay showed amazing bravery. They quickly went out in their own boats in the dark and rough water to rescue the survivors. Sadly, two people did not survive.
