A Look Back: Wymore's History

Wymore was started in 1881 as a town built around the railroad. A man named Sam Wymore donated the land for it.

The Welsh Connection

Wymore became known as the "Welsh Capitol of the Great Plains." Many families from Wales moved here. They kept their culture alive by starting a Welsh-language church, a school, and a cemetery. They also continued their traditions of poetry, dance, and music.

Changes Over Time

In the early 1900s, Wymore even had an electric tram! But as time passed, fewer people lived in the town, and trains were used less. The old train station was later burned down during a firefighting practice.

Keeping History Alive: The Welsh Heritage Project

In 2000, the Wymore Welsh Heritage Project began. Its goal is to remember and preserve the history of the early Welsh settlers. This project now includes a museum and a large collection of Welsh-language books. It also has many family records for people researching their Welsh roots.

Wymore is home to Southern High School. This school serves students from several nearby towns like Barneston, Holmesville, Blue Springs, Wymore, and Liberty. The school's sports teams are called the Raiders. They have won two state championships in wrestling, in 1974 and 1980. The local baseball field, Wymore Arbor State, has special covered seating behind home plate.
