Wyreema's History
The name Wyreema comes from its railway station. Nobody is quite sure where the name came from, but it's not an Aboriginal word.
The Railway Arrives
The Southern railway line first opened in this area on 11 March 1869. At first, there was no station in Wyreema. Later, on 19 September 1887, a new railway line called the Beauaraba branch railway line started from a station called Beauaraba Junction railway station (27°39′11″S 151°51′24″E / 27.6531°S 151.8567°E). This new line went to Pittsworth. In October 1893, Beauaraba Junction railway station was renamed Wyreema railway station.
In 1915, a new section of the railway called the Drayton Deviation was built. This made the journey from Toowoomba to Wyreema much shorter, cutting off about 15 kilometres (9.3 miles).
For a short time, from 1917 to around 1923, a special train service called a rail motor ran from Toowoomba through Wyreema.
