Y Lliwedd is a mountain connected to Snowdon, which is the highest mountain in Wales. It's located in the beautiful Snowdonia National Park in North Wales.
Its top, called the summit, is 898 meters (2,946 feet) above sea level. This means it's quite a tall mountain!
Exploring Y Lliwedd
The eastern side of Y Lliwedd has very steep cliffs. These cliffs rise high above two lakes, Glaslyn and Llyn Llydaw. If you are walking towards Snowdon using the Miners' or Pyg tracks, Y Lliwedd is one of the most noticeable peaks you will see.
Even though it's close to Snowdon, Y Lliwedd is often very quiet and peaceful. Many people who climb Snowdon stop there. They don't continue over to Y Lliwedd. This means you can enjoy the peace and quiet on Y Lliwedd, even when Snowdon's summit is busy.
Famous Climbers and Training
Many hikers and mountaineers enjoy walking over Y Lliwedd. It's part of a popular route called the Snowdon Horseshoe. This route takes you around several peaks, including Snowdon itself.
A very famous British climber named George Mallory did a lot of his early climbing practice here. He was known for his attempts to climb Mount Everest. Y Lliwedd was also used as a training ground for the team that made the first successful climb of Mount Everest in 1953.
The northern side of Y Lliwedd was first explored by climbers in the late 1800s. In 1909, the very first British climbing guide was written about this mountain. It was called The climbs on Lliwedd and was written by J. M. A. Thomson and A. W. Andrews.
