Yamaguchi had a lot of success with Hitachi. In 1972, his team won two big championships: the Japan Soccer League and the Emperor's Cup. They also won the Emperor's Cup again in 1975.
He played for Hitachi until 1975, when he stopped playing professional football. During his time with the club, he played in 121 games and scored 15 goals. He was so good that he was chosen as one of the best players in the Japan Soccer League for seven years in a row, from 1968 to 1974.

In 1968, he was again chosen to play for Japan at the 1968 Summer Olympics in Mexico City. He played in five matches, and his team did something amazing: they won a bronze medal!
